Course Description:

The workshop will be conducted in three separate topic concentrations

Counseling in Communication Disorders (Session 1)

  • This course will describe the application of counseling skills for clients with communication disorders and their families. Counseling theories and multicultural diversity will be integrated during the presentation.

Sugar-Sampling Utterances and Grammatical Analysis Revised (Session 2)

  • A recent national survey indicated that SLPs under-utilize the power of language sample analysis (LSA). Taking their stated reasons for not sampling more and better, Dr. Owens will present SUGAR (Sampling Utterances and Grammatical Utterances Revised), a simple, easy to use method for conducting quick, valid LSA that can further be used to suggest intervention goals. Participants are encouraged to bring their laptops and to analyze language samples along with Dr. Owens.

Transgender Voice and Communication (Session 3)

  • This course will describe transgender voice and communication intervention, focusing on people transitioning from male to female

Learner Outcomes:

Session 1
Participants will :
a) describe relevant counseling theories to clients with communication disroders and their families
b) apply counseling skills with a variety of clients and their families
c) apply active listening during culturally competent conversations.

Session 2
Participants will :
a) demonstrate robust sampling techniques
b) explain the rationale behind SUGAR
c) conduct a quick language sample analysis using Word and a laptop

Session 3
Participants will:
a) describe communication and voice intervention services appropriate for clients who are transgender
b) apply intervention strategies that will support clients who are transgender
c) apply steps to start providing voice and communication services for people who are transgender
