Best Practices in Pediatric Occupational Therapy

Course Description:
This networking dinner and educational session is designed as a beginner or intermediate level course for occupational therapy practitioners to network with other practitioners and learn about best practices in the provision of occupational therapy services to a pediatric population. Through lecture and discussion, participants will learn about current research literature supporting best practices in the provision of evidence-based pediatric occupational therapy services. Participants will be provided with resources relevant to sessions attended. Occupational therapy students with guidance from faculty will present information related to the following topics:
- Effective interventions to promote independence in eating for children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders (ASD).
- Effectiveness of Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT) in improving upper limb functioning in children diagnosed with cerebral palsy (CP).
- Use of assistive technology (AT) to promote participation in daily occupations for school-aged children with physical disabilities.
- Impact of sensory processing interventions on children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders (ASD)
- Outcomes achieved when children and adolescents participate in yoga activities.
- Outcomes based on participation in employment or social skills training programs for adolescents diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders (ASD)
Participants may participate in three of the six topics offered.
Objectives: At the conclusion of this course, participants will:
- describe current literature informing evidence-based practice in the provision of occupational therapy services to a specific pediatric population.
- describe application of best practices in therapeutic evaluation and intervention.
- discuss current evidence-based practice trends and resources when providing pediatric occupational therapy services.
