Empowering Communication and Literacy for AAC Users
Empowering Communication and Literacy for AAC Users
Thursday, December 4, 2025
via Zoom 6:00pm-8:00pm
Course Description:
This two hour professional development course explores the vital role of the Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) in supporting literacy development for individuals who use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). Participants will examine evidence-based strategies for integrating AAC into literacy instruction, with a focus on language development, early literacy skills, and system customization. Through case examples and practical tools, SLPs will gain a deeper understanding of how to embed AAC into reading and writing activities to promote communication, engagement, and academic success. The course emphasizes collaborative, student-centered approaches that align with educational goals and ensure meaningful access to literacy for all learners.
Learner Outcomes/Objectives: At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Explain how SLPs support language development through AAC by modeling and
expanding expressive language during literacy activities. - Describe how SLPs target early literacy skills-such as phonological awareness,
vocabulary, and comprehension-using AAC tools. - identify how SLPs customize AAC systems to support literacy development, ensuring
appropriate vocabulary, layout, and access features.
