10 Things Every Osprey Needs to Know

Welcome Ospreys

Galloway, N.J. - We’re ready for a full nest. September brings hints of fall, earlier sunsets and the arrival of new and returning Ospreys to Galloway and Atlantic City.

As the hallways and classrooms come back to life, President Joe Bertolino and the entire campus community look forward to welcoming students to campus.

Stockton is always evolving to meet the needs of our students, and new programs emerge to offer opportunities for growth, networking and engagement.

Below is this year’s list of 10 things every Osprey needs to know.

1. Find Your People

students
If you like to crochet, we have a club for that. If you like to tap dance, we have a club for that. If you like to eat cake, we have a club for that too. If you have a hobby or an interest, just type it into the search bar of Osprey Hub.

If something doesn’t match your interest, don’t worry. Students can work with Student Development to charter their own group to connect with like-minded students.

2. Don’t Be Afraid to Ask Questions

If you’re walking the halls searching for a classroom you can’t seem to find, just ask for help. Faculty, staff and your peers want to make the transition to campus life a welcoming and stress-free experience.

Students who work as math and writing tutors are waiting to answer your questions. The Tutoring Center is located in J-105, the Townsend Residential Life Center (TRLC) and on Zoom.

Writing tutoring is also available to graduate students and can be booked online.

Pro tip: If you’re a natural at calculating the area under a curve or like to workshop writing assignments, then you should consider applying to become a math tutor or taking the Writing Tutor Practicum course.

3. The Journey to Your Dream Job Starts Now

careers
Maybe you’ve known exactly what you want to be when you grow up since kindergarten. Maybe you’re a sophomore who switched majors twice and is still trying to figure out a plan. Either way, your journey will unfold, and you’re in charge of finding and making the most of opportunities that will lead to your success.

The Career Education and Development (CED) Office is a place you want to visit often regardless of where you are in your Stockton journey. Staff will help you polish your resume, connect you with internship and job opportunities and help you to network.

The Career Success Studio in the Campus Center Suite 104 is a multipurpose space for meetings, interviews, browsing job postings and attending workshops hosted by the CED.

4. The Stockton Library Turns a Page

library
Over the next two years, the Richard E. Bjork Library, named after Stockton’s founding president, will be transformed into a state-of-the-art Library Learning Commons that will triple the number of study rooms and offer new digital resources.

During the grant-funded $19.5 million renovation, the C/D Atrium will be a temporary library space. You can also request campus space for private study sessions through Event Services.

The new library will have new virtual reality and augmented reality technology, podcast equipment, a data wall, water filling stations, gender neutral bathrooms and more outlets for charging.

Pro tip: Pick up an Einstein Brothers coffee on your way to the atrium.

5. Pick Up Your Textbooks at the New Bookstore Location

The E wing Bookstore where textbooks are sold has moved as part of the Library renovation. The new location is F-003a in lower F wing.

The Campus Center Bookstore remains the primary spot for Stockton apparel, accessories and school supplies.

Pro tip: Right around the corner from the F wing Bookstore is the Multicultural Center. Drop in to read a book, work on a puzzle, connect with other students and check out their event schedule.

6. Be the CEO of Your Stockton Experience

CEO
Everyone has the chance to be a leader. Make the commitment to be a strong leader of your own life journey.

Stockton offers an internship experience that will prepare you for the workplace and professional success. The Cultural Engagement Osprey (CEO) Program provides mentorship, a professional development workshop series and an inclusive leadership conference that students help to plan.

Apply to be a Stockton CEO.

7. Prioritize Your Mental Health

Instead of scrolling on social media between classes, stop by the Game Room in the Coffeehouse for a quick round of ping pong or foosball. If you prefer the outdoors, we have nature trails through the woods and a footbridge, located alongside Parking Lot 7, that takes you through a cedar swamp.

Stockton has partnered with Uwill to provide free immediate access to teletherapy and mental health crisis support for students. All registered students have access to create a profile online and choose a therapist based on preferences including availability, issue, gender, language and ethnicity.

You can count on Lake Fred 24/7, 365 days a year, to be your outlet in nature. We suggest a sunset visit. And for those who crave more of an adventure, there is Lake Pam, a body of water that formed when sand was dug out for the creation of the Garden State Parkway.

8. Weeks of Welcome Lead to University Weekend

Stockton’s welcoming atmosphere doesn’t fade after the first day or week. Daily events offer opportunities to meet new friends and network, and then a month and a half into the semester, it’s time to invite your family to campus for University Weekend starting on Oct. 17.

A parade, street fair, Coast Day, Fred Fest and the Athletics Hall of Fame dinner are just a few of the events to look forward to.

Pro Tip: For the artists, crafters, jewelers and brands, check out the vendor opportunity for the street fair.

9. Root for the Ospreys

The best way to help the Ospreys soar higher is to attend games and show your school spirit. The Athletics schedule is online and results are posted following games and meets.

The first home athletics events are the men’s and women’s cross country meets on Aug. 30, field hockey versus Salisbury on Sept. 1, men’s soccer versus Notre Dame of Maryland University on Sept. 7 and volleyball versus Ursinus College on Sept. 10.

The I wing gym has a weight room that features free weights and Sorinex equipment. The facility also includes a cardio room, basketball court, racquetball courts and locker rooms. The Sports Center houses a fitness center. Hours are posted online for the Sports Center and I wing facilities.

10.  Don't Forget to Take the Scenic Route

bikingStockton provides free parking for students. Make sure you park in the appropriate lots and register your vehicle to avoid getting a ticket.

A shuttle service is offered for both the Galloway and Atlantic City campuses. View the shuttle routes and times online.

Pro tip: Bring a bike to cruise the paved pathway along Lake Fred that connects Housing I, IV and V and the main academic buildings.
