Galloway, N.J. – Calling all women who are interested in math! The club Stockton Women in Mathematics (SWIM) unifies students to support and inspire women in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields.

Though the club focuses on women in mathematics, people of all genders within STEM are welcome to join. For example, Yani Barnes – secretary and treasurer of SWIM – isn’t even a Mathematics major; the Computer Science major became a member to meet more students like her.

“I wanted to join a math community,” Barnes said. “I couldn’t find any computer science clubs or computer clubs that were targeted toward women. I really wanted to join a community of women in STEM.”

Katelyn Brink, co-president of the club, says that SWIM “is a place to bring people together and have a proactive environment.”

Members will learn a lot about the Math department at Stockton University, as well as discover the resources that they and SWIM have to offer. At meetings, incoming members can look forward to learning about math-related careers and meeting new people to study with. Some meeting topics in the past included movie nights, group study sessions and game nights as well as serious topics like combatting sexism and imposter syndrome.

SWIM hosts their meetings every other Wednesday at 5 p.m. Interested students can join the club through OspreyHub and follow them on Instagram, @SWIM_Stockton.
