Scrape, Tape, and Glide
Scrape, Tape, and Glide: Restoring Space, Motion, and Slack for Restricted Neural Dynamics of the Upper Quarter
Rescheduled
Friday, April 7 and Saturday, April 8, 2017
Friday, April 7 Registration: begins at 4:30 pm, Program time: 5:00 pm-8:00 pm
Saturday, April 8 7:30 am check in. Program time: 8:00 am-6:00 pm
Course Description:
The concept of restricted neural dynamics is not new; however, its impact on our patients' daily activities and movement tolerance is often overlooked during the examination and treatment of our patients. This course integrates the basic concept of "test-treat-retest" as a foundation to manage these challenging patients. Motion based interventions consisting of neural flossing, nerve bed/nerve differential gliding, and instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM); as well as corrective exercises and taping are covered in this upper extremity focused course. The basic principle that neural tissue needs space, motion, and slack for optimal healing potential underpins all concepts covered.
Objectives: At the completion of this course you will be able to:
- Recognize the 2 main regions of the brachial plexus and map patients' symptoms to these areas
- Recognize the 2 conditions that increase the potential for nerve injury vulnerability and the 3 possible pathoogies of the nervous system
- Indentify the 2 signs and 4 symptons of brachial plexalgia
- Apply and document findings for neural mobility testing of the UE using the neural mobility grading scale (0-5/5) fpr biasing the brachial plexus, radial, median and ulnar neural tissue and nerve beds
- Differentiate between neural and non-neural structures of the UE/LE through positioning, palpation and symptom behavior
- Generate a treatment plan, and establish goals and prognosis based on exam results from case studies
- Identify, understand, and apply basic treatment to restore space, motion, and slack including 5 exercises, 5 manual techniques and 5 home exercise/ADL modifications for the UE with case studies and labs
- Choose from among 3 appropriate IASTM treatments to enhance movement and space for movement dysfunctions resulting from restricted neural mobility of the upper quarter
- Choose from taping techniques to enhance slack promoting posture correction and inhibition of neuropathic pain
