November 9, 2020
6:00pm-8:00pm Course Presented using Zoom
All registrants will be emailed the course link prior to the course date.
Course Description:
An interdisciplinary discussion to incite dialogue surrounding evaluation and management of dysphagia in the medically fragile neonate and infant. A variety of case studies will be presented, detailing use of instrumentation (videofluoroscopy and endoscopy) to diagnose and treat dysphagia in the neonatal intensive care unit and outpatient setting. Areas to be discussed include: impact of comorbidities on swallowing function and prognosis, treatment modalities and preserving swallowing patency in fragile infants, and the value of interdisciplinary care in supporting optimal feeding outcomes.
Objectives: At the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- The participant will be able to define structural and physiologic deficits that can cause dysphagia in infants.
- The participant will be able to state clinical indications for use of instrumental evaluations to characterize swallowing physiology in infants.
- The participant will be able to identify therapeutic interventions utilized during instrumentation to achieve swallowing integrity.
- The participant will define appropriate discharge recommendations based on objectified physiology for premature and sick infants.
