Best Practices in Pediatric Occupational Therapy 4/17

Course Description:

This networking dinner and educational session is designed as a beginner or intermediate level course for occupational therapy practitioners to network with other practitioners and learn about best practices in the provision of occupational therapy services to a pediatric population. Through lecture and discussion, participants will learn about current research literature supporting best practices in the provision of evidence-based pediatric occupational therapy services. Participants will be provided with resources relevant to sessions attended. Occupational therapy students with guidance from faculty will present information related to the following topics:

Effective nonsurgical interventions to promote UE function in children diagnosed with brachial plexus injury

Use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) to improve social participation for children diagnosed with autism/ASD

Effectiveness of aquatic therapy for children diagnosed with cerebral palsy

Impact of play on executive function for young children

Effectiveness of CBT, yoga, music and art in reducing anxiety for children diagnosed with anxiety disorder

Impact of pediatric disability on parents

Participants may participate in three of the six topics offered.

Objectives: At the conclusion of this course, participants will:

  • describe current literature informing evidence-based practice in the provision of occupational therapy services to a specific pediatric population.
  • describe application of best practices in therapeutic evaluation and intervention.
  • discuss current evidence-based practice trends and resources when providing pediatric occupational therapy services.
