Marine Science Internships for Credit

Internships are valuable opportunities for you to gain experience while also helping you successfully apply to additional internships, jobs and get into graduate school. Most internships do not require that you sign up for academic credit; however, if you decide that you wish to receive academic credit for your internship (1-4 credits), there is a particular process and set of requirements for academic credit within the Marine Science program. Keep in mind, whether receiving credit or not, your internships are excellent experiences to add to your CV!

Marine Science Internships for Academic Credit

A student will be expected to maintain 2 hours per week of academic, credit-based work for every 1 hour they request in credit hours. For instance, if a student decides they wish to register for 2 credits for an internship, their faculty sponsor will work with them to design academic work at 4 hours per week.

Requirements for all Marine Science students doing an internship for credit (1-4) include:

  1. Weekly online work log entries
  2. Monthly meetings with the internship supervisor (e.g, at Atlantic City Aquarium it would be Laura Birnbom)
  3. Monthly meetings with faculty internship supervisor (e.g, Dr. Z)
  4. Research paper on a topic to be developed by intern (e.g, working with Dr. Z to decide on a topic, including writing an annotated bibliography, outlining the paper, writing drafts and a final paper)
  5. Public speaking activity (e.g., design and execute an outreach activity for use at the Atlantic City Aquarium traveling touch tank or give a talk at one of the MARS Cafe speaker series).


All students in Marine Science will be held to the same standards when seeking academic credit but the length of the paper and type of public speaking activity will be modified to reach the 1 credit = 2 academic effort hours model and the specifics of the internship site.
