SILL: The American Civil War

Fridays, 10/7, 14, 21, & 28/2022, 12:45-1:45pm, Stockton at Manahawkin | The Civil War narrative is large and often confusing in its telling. It is evoked each generation to explain not only what happened but also to explain the relationship between the states and the Federal Government, the rights of individual citizens, and the Myriad issues of race in America. The military history is sweeping and exciting but is the political accommodations, the arrangements and the compromises which form the basis for contemporary arguments regarding federalism. This course examines the military, political, and cultural issues which compromise the legacy of the civil war with an eye towards their application to current issues in the United States.
