What is Education Abroad? 

 

Education Abroad refers to the high-impact practice of Stockton students pursuing education in a different country other than the U.S., including, but not limited to:

  • enrollment in courses,
  • experiential learning,
  • internships,
  • service learning, and
  • other learning activities.
Education abroad usually involves academic credits.

What You Need to Know about Education Abroad

In order to ensure your academic success, you need to meet the following requirements:

  • Minimum GPA Requirement: 2.5
  • No academic probation
  • Be at least a second semester freshman/transfer student

Long-term Study Abroad Programs: You will study abroad more than 3 weeks, usually one semester or even one year. 

  • Exchange Programs

    • You will study abroad at one of Stockton's Global Partner Institutions.
    • You will pay Stockton's tuition and fee and pay housing and meals to the partner institution.
    • We will transfer credits back to Stockton after your study abroad.
  • Provider Programs
    • You will study abroad through third-party providers.
    • You will have access to more and diverse programs.
    • You will pay tuition and fee to the providers.
    • We will transfer credits back to Stockton after your study abroad.
  • Petition Programs
    • You will directly enroll in a target institution.
    • You will pay the tuition and fee to the target institution.
    • We will transfer credits back to Stockton after your study abroad. 

Short-term Study Abroad Programs: You will study abroad less than a semester.  

  • Faculty-led Programs
    • You will register and take a "regular" Stockton course on campus. 
    • You will travel with Stockton faculty and classmates.  
    • The travel portion of the course usually lasts 2-3 weeks and happens before (e.g. December), during (e.g. the Spring break), or after (e.g. May) the course. 
    • You will pay the travel cost to Stockton University. 
    • You will receive Stockton credit for this course. No extra credits for travel. 
  • Research/Internship/Service-learning Programs  

Generally you need to consider the following three factors: 

  • Academics: You need to choose the program to match your major or general education requirements and desirable courses.  
  • Personal Goals: You need to consider the outcomes of the program to match your expected goals, such as language skills, boosting confidence and independence, etc. 
  • Program Costs: You need to compare the oveall cost of the program, including tuition, fee, housing, meals, airfare, local travel, visa, etc. 
  • Funding: Some study abroad will fall under your financial aid. You need to also explore the variety of scholarships available to you. 

You can start planning your study abroad at any time. Here is a rough timeline: 

EA Process

Application 1: Complete an online Stockton study abroad application that includes the following:

  • Application Essay
  • Consent for Treatment
  • Disciplinary Record
  • Provider Application (complete separately through you provider's webpage)
  • Travel Waiver
  • 2* Recommendation letters (send requests electronically on your application)
  • Copy of Health Insurance Card
  • Copy of valid Passport
  • Emergency Contact Info
  • $200 Application Fee
  • Cost Sheet
  • Course Selection Sheet
  • WorldKind Pre-departure orientation 
Application 2: Some study abroad programs might require another separate application with the Providers (i.e. Semester-long Provider Program) or Host Institutions (i.e. Exchange Program) on their websites and their application fee.

If you want to know how to make study abroad happen, please make sure to attend our Education Abroad 101 Workshop. In this workshop, you will receive the most recent update from OGE staff and then get ready to start an application. We usually offer one workshop each week (Tuesdays).
