The Holocaust Survivors of South Jersey Project Lecture
Galloway, N.J. – The Wally and Lutz Hammerschlag Chair in the Holocaust & Genocide Studies program will host a free lecture on Thursday, Aug. 15, at 3 p.m. in Campus Center Meeting Room 5, centered on the more than 1,800 Holocaust survivors who fled to South Jersey and rebuilt their lives as chicken farmers.
Michael Hayse, professor of Historical Studies and director of the Holocaust Survivors of South Jersey Project, will examine how the arrival of these refugees from the mid-1930s to the mid-1950s impacted the local Jewish communities and the social/economic life of the region. The stories gathered by numerous Holocaust survivor families will illustrate the diverse challenges faced by these immigrants, in addition to their resilience and contributions to South Jersey.
This event is sponsored by the Alliance Heritage Center with the support of the Mellon Foundation.
