WHAT WE’RE TALKING ABOUT

students outside Youth Experiences Wonders of Science at Tween Tech

Before helping each group of students complete their laser projects, Stockton Physics Professor Joseph Trout asked the same question.

“Are there any future scientists here?”

Quite a few of the middle schoolers said yes, including Lilly Voss, an eighth grader from Galloway Township Middle School. She was one of about 150 girls from six South Jersey middle schools on Jan. 3 who participated in Tween Tech, an annual event to engage girls in fields in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

“I love how they are teaching us different things that we don’t really learn in school,” said Voss, who took Trout’s Lasers and Lissajous Figures workshop. She worked with a partner to build a device to display laser figures on a wall. “Like lasers, I haven’t done that in school.

“I also like how it’s all women. It’s super cool to see all the girls here.”

Each participant chose two of 11 different workshops ranging from building a wind-powered turbine and tapping sap in Stockton’s Maple Grove to investigating a crime scene and coding a spherical robot.

dancers PAC’s 2024-25 Season Continues, Concludes in May

Like the new year, Stockton's Performing Arts Center (PAC) is emerging from the winter and warming up with shows sure to please everybody.

Anjanette Christy, director of the PAC, anticipates that this spring will encompass the very essence of performing arts, from music to dance to theater.

“As we step into spring, we’re excited to create memorable experiences for our community," Christy said. "From the gospel roots of the Blind Boys of Alabama to the timeless tradition of 'Madama Butterfly,' each performance offers something very special. 'Moon Mouse: A Space Odyssey' brings a delightful, family-friendly adventure, while Giordano Dance Chicago celebrates 62 years of jazz dance artistry, set to some of Gershwin’s timeless classics. Together, these performances help us connect through music, storytelling and movement.”

The Noyes Arts Garage of Stockton University will debut a new and unique exhibit this month featuring dynamic and diverse works of art created by 35 professors at southern New Jersey colleges and universities.

“Academic Visions: Southern NJ University and College Art Professors Showcase” will debut Jan. 18 and run until May 3. There will be a free opening reception at 1 p.m. Feb. 3 at the Arts Garage.

Michael Cagno, the executive director of the Arts Garage, believes this is the first time there’s been an exhibit bringing together art from professors at different colleges in South Jersey. In addition to Stockton University, professors from Rutgers and Rowan universities, Rowan College at Burlington County and Atlantic Cape Community College submitted artwork.

“The exhibit displays skillful craftsmanship and a dialogue between mentors and their artistic journey, encouraging students and visitors alike to explore the intersection of academia and creativity,” Cagno said. “From avant-garde sculptures to thought-provoking paintings, the exhibit spans various mediums and styles, reflecting the rich tapestry of influences that these professors bring into their artistic practices.”

Fun Fact Friday:🦅Today is National Save the Eagles Day, a day that raises awareness about eagles and the conservation efforts to prevent their extinction. The day's history is an inspiring story that began in Ridgefield Park, New Jersey, during mid-winter, the perfect nesting season for bald eagles, where a pair of eagles named Alice and Al had nested along Overpeck Creek since 2011. A study in 2014 brought to light that a landfill near their nest posed community health risks. The development corporation’s solution was to remove the tree the eagles nested in. When this announcement was made public, the local community and the Bergen County Audubon Society organized Save The Eagles Day on Jan. 10, 2015. Both parties eventually reached an agreement, and that part of the land was preserved as Eagle Park.

The pair nested and lived there for several years, and today, there is a new pair that made their home in the same nest. These types of laws and acts of awareness have clearly done something right because, just this month, New Jersey removed bald eagles (and ospreys!) from the endangered species list.
