Galloway, N.J. – Murphy Writing of Stockton University is offering five scholarships for first-time participants of the Winter Poetry & Prose Getaway, a writers’ conference at the Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club in Galloway, N.J. Jan. 13-16, 2017.

Scholarship recipients may choose from workshops in fiction, memoir, nonfiction, songwriting, screenwriting and poetry. Celebrating its 24th anniversary, the Winter Getaway has become one of the oldest and largest writers’ conferences in the winter season, attracting more than 200 writers from across the country each year. Among the prestigious faculty are Stockton’s Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Creative Writing, Stephen Dunn, and poet Sharon Olds—both of whom are Pulitzer Prize winners.

“We know that many writers do not have the finances to attend the Getaway,” said conference founder, Peter Murphy, “so we have established scholarships to help them attend. Over the last eight years, many of these scholarship recipients have gone on to have successful writing careers, publishing their work in both prominent literary journals and books of their own.”

“I’m in awe of the community you’ve fostered here,” said Helen Cooke, of Haddon Heights, N.J., a past recipient of the Toni Brown Memorial Scholarship. “The Winter Getaway has kick-started my writing for the new year. I’m already looking forward to next year!”

The following are scholarship opportunities funded by the Jan-ai Scholarship Fund, Elke Hirsh’s family, the Winter Getaway faculty and staff and Murphy Writing of Stockton University.

The Toni Brown Memorial Scholarship will offer two scholarships to poets or writers aged 31 and over.

The Jan-ai Scholarship Fund will sponsor two individuals between the ages of 18 – 30.

The Elke Hirsh Music Award will enable one songwriter between the ages of 21 – 30 to attend.
