Galloway, N.J. – Family and friends of a former Stockton University coach honored his legacy by establishing the Eric Illjes Memorial Endowed Scholarship this week.

Illjes was instrumental in building the Stockton women’s volleyball program, first as an assistant coach from 1993-1999, then as head coach until 2005, shepherding the team to its first NCAA tournament in 1999 and first tournament victory in 2000.

The $30,000 endowment was supported by Illjes’ niece Jennifer and her husband, Jerry Hall, his brother and sister-in-law Theodore and Carolyn Illjes, and longtime assistant coach and friend Greg Langan.

“His life was guided by the principle of service, whether to his country, his community, his students, or those in need around the world. This scholarship supports Stockton students who embody Eric’s dedication to excellence, resilience and service, ensuring his spirit continues to inspire future generations,” said Dan Nugent, vice president for University Advancement and executive director of the Stockton University Foundation.

“He loved life, loved the ocean, his friends and his students,” Jennifer Illjes said. “He did not have children, so we wanted one small thing that would continue his memory. He was passionate about the environment and the ocean, his friends and his students.”

Illjes was a U.S. Army veteran, accomplished scientist, coach and mentor. He died from cancer in May 2024. The scholarship will benefit students pursuing degrees in Marine Science at Stockton.

“Thank you for creating this opportunity. A real legacy is the people who remember you, how they learned from you and how they passed it on to others. This gift will allow his memory and legacy to live on,” said President Joe Bertolino at the gift signing Nov. 3.

As head coach, Illjes posted an impressive 157-90 overall record and was selected New Jersey Athletic Conference Coach of the Year three times (1999, 2000, 2005) and led the Ospreys to 20 or more victories in six of his seven seasons as head coach.

He remained connected to the program following his retirement by hosting the Ospreys at his Ocean City residence for breakfast following their annual preseason run on the Boardwalk.
