Atlantic City Walking Tours: Downbeach and Beyond

Atlantic City, N.J. — The Office of Continuing Studies & Adult Education will expand its popular Walking Tour Series this fall with the "Downbeach and Beyond" tours.

These Downbeach tours will explore the bedroom communities that have supported the Greater Atlantic City history for over a century. The guided tours — led by historian and professor Levi Fox — will explore historical landmarks, events and subcultures of three different neighborhoods. 

October 6 — The Lucy Loop(Margate/Longport)

This tour will be centralized around the City of Margate and historic Lucy the Elephant. Prominent points of interest include Old Margate City Hall and Historical Society Museum, PartiPak Deli/”Club Wawa,” Main Street businesses, the Gold Coast mansions, military monuments, various beach block homes and, of course, Lucy the Elephant. 

October 13 — Historic Somers Point

Starting at Somers Mansion, this tour will highlight the Somers Point Historical Society, historic Bay Front District including Smitty’s Clam Bar, Anchorage Tavern, Gregory's Restaurant & Bar, Charlie’s Bar and various historical homes, Delaware Avenue and the Somers Point Museum.

October 20 — Downtown Ocean City 

Starting in the heart of Ocean City’s Business District, walkers will see the Historic Ocean City Tabernacle, Marrying House, Scotch Hall, Corson House, the Fourth Street Life Saving Station, Sally Lake House, Piqua, the S. Wesley Lake House and more.

All tours are $10 per person and will begin at 12 p.m. Participants are encouraged to wear walking shoes and bring a water bottle, as each tour will cover 2 to 3 miles of parks, city streets, boardwalks and beaches.

Continuing Studies Program Does AC Through Walking Tours

Galloway, N.J. — Around 30 people braved a heat wave to embark on a tour through Atlantic City’s former “gayborhood,” now known as the Orange Loop, on Friday, July 22. Thanks to the occasional ocean breeze and some shadowed areas along the route, participants of the program, sponsored by Stockton’s Office of Continuing Studies, learned about Atlantic City’s cultural history.
