Galloway, N.J. - Bettina L. Love will be the featured speaker at the 18th Annual Fannie Lou Hamer Human and Civil Rights Symposium at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 12 in the Performing Arts Center and via Zoom.  The theme of this year's event is “Hip Hop and Social Justice.”  

Love is the author of “We Want to Do More Than Survive: Abolitionist Teaching and the Pursuit of Educational Freedom.” She is a sought-after public speaker on a range of topics including: abolitionist teaching, anti-racism, Hip Hop education, Black girlhood, queer youth, Hip Hop feminism, art-based education to foster youth civic engagement, and issues of diversity and inclusion. In 2020, Love co-founded the Abolitionist Teaching Network (ATN). ATN’s mission is to develop and support teachers and parents to fight injustice within their schools and communities.”

Fannie Lou Hamer fought for African Americans' voting rights during the Civil Rights movement. She made history in 1964 by giving testimony at the Democratic National Convention in Atlantic City in opposition to the seating of an all-white Mississippi delegation.
