WHAT WE’RE TALKING ABOUT

veterans ceremonyAnnual Ceremony Honors the Contribution of Vets and Their Families

The Military and Veteran Success Center of Stockton University commemorated Veterans Day, which is nationally celebrated on Nov. 11, with a week of celebrations that included a Veterans Day Recognition Ceremony in the Campus Center Grand Hall on Nov. 6.

The annual ceremony’s speeches emphasized two major themes — the importance of learning from and honoring the past and the profound impact of familial support for those who are or have served.
Maj. Steven Mares (Ret.), a senior Army instructor for Central Regional High School's JROTC program, served as this year’s guest speaker. He shared details about one of the community service projects created by CRHS-JROTC upperclassmen that he has helped facilitate.

The project’s main purpose — to honor and highlight the contributions of the over 30,000 Vietnam War veterans currently living in Bayville — made the retired major proud. The statistics that the high school students found and shared with him in a presentation proposing the project, however, made Mares admittedly emotional.

First to Fly DinnerFirst to Fly Dinner Concludes First-Gen Week Celebrations

A week of celebrating first-generation students culminated in a special dinner on Thursday, Nov. 7, which honored 25 “First to Fly” students, alumni, faculty and staff.

National First-Generation Week, celebrated the first week of November, recognizes the challenges that first-generation students face when they are the first in their families to pursue an undergraduate degree and honors the hard work and sacrifices that they make in their journey.

Stockton's week-long celebration kicked off with a luncheon in which students talked with guest speaker Daniel Jean, a first-generation student who went on to become associate provost for Rowan University’s Educational Opportunity and Success Programs on Nov. 5.

The celebration then continued with Bingo Night on Nov. 6, where students played and won prizes amongst their peers in the student organization First Ospreys.

Interfaith PanelInterfaith Panel Tries to Bridge Divides, Build Community

Bringing people together in a public space to share different perspectives and listen to others with empathy can be a powerful way to bridge divides and build community.

That was one of the main themes of an interfaith panel discussion held Nov. 4 in the Michael Jacobson Board of Trustees Room at Stockton. The discussion was part of the Peaceful Pathways Forward series started this fall. Other events this semester included a Good Neighbor Walk on the Atlantic City Boardwalk in front of Kesselman Hall on Oct. 27 and a day of prayer, meditation and understanding on Oct. 7.

“These programs evolved as a result of our commitment to providing spaces for our community to engage in conversations about what’s happening here and throughout the world, and our ongoing collaboration and partnership with community-based Bridge of Faith, which represents a diverse group of clergy and lay leaders from throughout the community,” said Brian K. Jackson, vice president for Community Engagement at Stockton.

FRAME-WORTHY

Veterans Portrait seriesPicture Stockton... Honoring Veterans with a Portrait Project

Some Stockton students have worked around the world, lived on ships, trained for combat and made sacrifices to serve their country. Now, they're in the classroom.

More than 400 student veterans and military-affiliated students are currently bringing their life and work experience to campus as they begin a new journey. The Military and Veteran Success Center (MVSC) in F-105 ensures that they are not on this new mission alone.

Veterans connect with other veterans in the lounge space, meet with financial and academic advisers and have a space where they can bond and build a community.

Jouseline Georges, who joined the Army and worked as a military police officer for 9 years, came to Stockton to study social work. Having a dedicated space and staff to support veterans helped her "feel at ease and at peace."

Her military experiences inspired her to pursue a degree that will allow her to help children.

President Joe's State of the University Address Nov. 12

Reminder: President Joe’s State of the University Address was rescheduled to this Tuesday, Nov, 12, from 4:30-5:45 p.m. in the Campus Center Theatre. A Zoom option is also available for those unable to attend in person.

Fun Fact Friday: 🪵It seems fitting that Nov. 1 would be National Cinnamon Day since it has that Fall vibe. The day was founded by McCormick in 2019 to celebrate the ancient spice that has become a longstanding part of many holiday memories and baked goods. Indonesia and China are the primary producers of Cinnamon, making up 70% of the worldwide production. Cinnamon is also an effective anti-inflammatory, which links it to health benefits. If you're a fan of the spice, today is a great day for some tea, cinnamon toast, a sweet treat or whatever your cinna-heart desires.
