WHAT WE’RE TALKING ABOUT
Author Discusses the Legacy of White Supremacy in Education
“Today is so much a product of yesterday that yesterday can only be understood as it is explained by today… For the present is simply the developing past, the past is the undeveloped present.”
Donald Yacovone, the guest lecturer for the 13th annual Paul Lyons Memorial Lecture, began his presentation with a quote by American historian Frederick Jackson Turner on March 28 in the Campus Center Theatre.
Yacovone is a lifetime fellow for the Hutchins Center for African American Research located at Harvard University. He is also a winner (along with Henry Louis Gates, Jr.) of the NAACP’s 2014 Image Award for their six-part documentary series, “The African-Americans: Many Rivers to Cross.”
Stockton Again Receives Military Friendly Designation
Stockton recently earned top honors for its outreach to military veterans by receiving the Military Friendly School Gold designation.
It’s the second year in a row the school accepted a Military Friendly designation, but the first time it received the Gold award. The designation is for the 2023-24 year in the small public school category.
Last year, the school was awarded Silver status. The designation comes from the Military Friendly Schools survey, which is the longest-running and most comprehensive review of college and university investments in serving military and veteran students.
“This designation proves Stockton’s continuing commitment to supporting military veterans seeking higher education and providing them with resources to be successful,” said Michael Barany, director of the Military and Veterans Success Center at Stockton. “I’m especially thrilled that Stockton has been upgraded to Gold status for this very prestigious designation.”
Fitch Upgrades Stockton to 'A' Rating
Stockton was upgraded to an ‘A’ bond rating with Fitch Ratings, the company announcedMarch 28.
In its news release, Fitch said: “The ‘A’ IDR and bond ratings for Stockton reflect the University's steady rise in net student-driven revenues over the past several years in part due to new beachside student housing in Atlantic City that boosted auxiliary revenues even as enrollment faced moderate pandemic-era declines. With roughly 9,100 enrolled students as of fall 2022, Stockton's ratings also incorporate signs of stabilization in student enrollment.”
The analysis also noted the University benefits from increasing amounts of state performance-based funding tied to graduation levels and other success metrics.
