25th Annual Murphy Writing Winter Writing Getaway

Galloway, NJ – Murphy Writing of Stockton University will present its Annual Winter Getaway Writers Conference Jan. 12-15 at the Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club, 401 S. New York Road, Galloway.

Celebrating its 25th Anniversary, the Winter Getaway is one of the oldest and largest writers' conferences in the winter season.

Participants receive craft discussion, writing prompts, writing time, feedback, motivation and inspiration. Participants can choose from workshops in poetry, novel writing, freelance writing, memoir, fiction, nonfiction, writing for children and poetry. There is also a Creative Writing Sampler for those who want a chance to dip their toes in all types of writing.

Pulitzer Prize-winning poets Stephen Dunn and Gregory Pardlo are among the faculty at the Getaway.

Dunn, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Creative Writing at Stockton University, is the author of nineteen volumes of poetry including Different Hours, which was awarded the 2001 Pulitzer Prize. Pardlo’s Digest was awarded the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. His other honors include fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York Foundation for the Arts.

“The Murphy Getaways are truly the highlight of each year for me,” said Dione Carroll of Laurel Springs, who attends two Murphy Writing programs a year. “I get the chance to focus on the things dearest to my heart alongside those of a like mind. There’s nothing like it in Jersey. Every writer owes it to himself to go at least once in their life.”

“By spending the entire weekend in one workshop, participants will venture deeper into their writing, making more progress than they thought possible,” Murphy said.

The $495 tuition includes a 15-hour writing workshop and most meals. Attendees also have the opportunity to participate in open mics, tutorials, networking, sunrise yoga, dancing at the Getaway Disco and writerly camaraderie.

"Writing is typically a solitary act," Murphy said. "But when writers come together in a supportive community that encourages them to push their boundaries, they often experience breakthroughs."

The program is open to the public. Discounts are available for those who have attended other Murphy Writing programs, as well as Stockton students, alumni, faculty, adjuncts or staff with a Z-number. For registration information, visit stockton.edu/murphywriting or call 609-626-3594.

South Jersey teachers may be eligible to have their districts pay their tuition when they register with ETTC hours. To learn more about using their school’s ETTC credits to attend, teachers should visit http://wintergetaway.com/ettc.
