Ventnor, N.J. — A new documentary produced by Stockton University about the restoration of a 250-year-old Torah that survived the Holocaust will be screened in Ventnor on Aug. 30.

“Saved from the Shoah: the Hammerschlag Family Torah Returns” will be shown at 11 a.m. at the Chabad Chai Center at 6605 Atlantic Ave. in Ventnor. Guests will also have the rare opportunity to witness the Torah’s final letters being completed by the scribe with the participation of guests. Lennard Hammerschalg, the focus of the documentary, will write the final letter on the Torah, completing its restoration and making it kosher.

In 1939, when the Hammerschlag family fled Nazi persecution in Lauenau, Germany, for safety in Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), one of the few items they chose to bring with them was a treasured Torah. In 2018, the Torah returned to Lauenau, when Lennard Hammerschlag and his brother Marc revisited the building that had once been its home. Their remarkable journey inspired the documentary produced by the Sara and Sam Schoffer Holocaust Resource Center and the university’s video production team.
