Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage celebrations

Galloway, N.J. — Stockton University will kick off its annual Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage celebration in April, bringing a series of student-organized events to campus before the end of the spring semester.

Organized with support from Stockton Student Senate and multiple student organizations, this year's celebration, which is held the month before Asian-American Pacific Islander Heritage Month in May, offers events spanning cultural traditions, art, food and community.

Featured events include:

  • Cultural Night, sponsored by the International Student Association, on April 18. Experience a wide range of delicious foods and enjoy music representing different countries from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Fannie Lou Hamer Event Room at Stockton’s Atlantic City campus.
  • Misago Convention, Stockton inaugural anime event, sponsored by the Stockton University Anime Club from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on April 19. For more information, email misagoconvention@gmail.com or stocktonanimeclub@gmail.com, or visit the convention’s website.
  • The Art & Math of Origami Showcase, featuring students enrolled in Professor Norma Boakes’ course “The Art and Match of Origami” on April 22. The theme of this year’s showcase is film genres. In addition to the artwork of 25 Stockton students, 50 fifth graders from Egg Harbor Township will also join the show this year. The showcase will be on display in the Campus Center.
  • Holi: Festival of Colors, sponsored by the Indian Student Association, on April 22. The event will take place at 5 p.m. in the TRLC quad. Free food from Nizam’s, free colors and white T-shirts (while supplies last) will be provided. The event is free for Stockton students, $8 for alumni and $10 for guests. Tickets can be purchased at the Campus Center Info Desk.
  • Lights on the Lake, on April 23, presented by the School of Arts and Humanities’ Philosophy and Religion program and Active Minds. The event runs from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Lakeside Oasis near Lake Fred. The event encourages attendees to write your future intentions on biodegradable paper, fold a symbolic plane and launch it to light up Lake Fred alongside a flotilla of zero-impact LED lotus flowers.

All AAPIH events are open to members of the Stockton community, and many are open to the general public. Additional events and initiatives are still being added to the schedule.
