Al Gold Memorial Lecture Series featuring Marta Sanchez

Galloway, N.J. — Chicana artist Marta Sanchez is the featured speaker at the annual Al Gold Memorial Lecture Series at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4 in the Campus Center Theatre.

Marta Sanchez

Born and raised in San Antonio, Sanchez has been inspired by traditional Mexican folkloric art expressions and contemporary issues. Her works on paper are mostly linocuts and monotypes, which follow the social and cultural traditions of Mexican and Chicana art. Her paintings are mainly on tin or aluminum.

Her work is on display at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the State Museum of Pennsylvania, the Fine Art Museum of St. Petersburg, Florida, and the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago. She teaches at Saint Joseph University and the Woodmere Art Museum in Philadelphia. She is also the co-founder of the grassroots organization “Cascarones Por La Vida,” which assists families affected by HIV/AIDS.

Ian Marshall, the dean of Stockton’s School of Arts and Humanities, and Distinguished Professor of Art Wendel A. White will provide opening remarks. A reception in the Art Gallery will follow the lecture.

Al Gold was Atlantic City’s first chief photographer. During his tenure, he photographed many of the city’s most iconic moments in history, including the Miss America pageants and numerous celebrities taking a stroll on the Boardwalk. He held this position from 1939 until he passed away in 1964. To keep his memory alive, his daughter Vicki Gold-Levi and White created the Al Gold Memorial Lecture Series, which brings a distinguished speaker (typically within arts and culture) to campus every year.
