An Evening with Melissa Jacoby: “Unjust Debts: How Our Bankruptcy System Makes America More Unequal”

Galloway, N.J. – Melissa Jacoby, a law professor and author, will discuss her book and the role of debt and inequality in the United States starting at 6 p.m. in the Stockton University Art Gallery on Tuesday, Nov. 11.

Jacoby’s discussion, hosted by the William J. Hughes Center for Public Policy, invites both the Stockton community and members of the surrounding community. Refreshments will be served during the event.

Jacoby’s first book, “Unjust Debts,” was published by The New Press in June 2024. She has spoken around the country and the world about debt, lending, commercial law and bankruptcy and is a frequent commentator in the news media on these topics.

In 2021, the Chief Justice of the United States, John Roberts, appointed her to help design educational programming for the nation’s bankruptcy courts and reappointed her to that role in 2025.

Jacoby has been elected to the American Law Institute, the American College of Commercial Finance Lawyers, the American College of Bankruptcy and the National Bankruptcy Conference. She has also served as the Robert M. Zinman Scholar for the American Bankruptcy Institute.
