Healing Through Mandala
Galloway, N.J. – A group of Tibetan Monks from the Drepung Gomang Monastery will be on the Stockton University campus for a week of cultural events – including creating a mandala, traditional dancing and a tea offering ritual – starting on Monday, April 7.
This event is sponsored by the Office of the Provost, the School of Arts & Humanities, the William T. Daly School of General Studies, the Philosophy and Religion program, the Integrative Health Minor program, The Noyes Museum of Art, the Office of Global Engagement, the Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Celebration Committee and Chartwells.
The week will begin with an opening ceremony at 10:30 a.m. on April 7 in the Campus Center. Immediately following the ceremony at 12 p.m., 10 students will be invited to join the monks for a complimentary lunch at The Nest.
Lunches with the monks at The Nest will continue throughout the week at the same time with a different set of students every day. Interested students are required to RSVP by registering on OspreyHub and may email Associate Professor of Asian Philosophy Jongbok Yi for more information.
Starting at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8, students will be joining the monks in creating mantra stones in the Campus Center.
The monks will join Stockton’s Asian Student Alliance for its annual Phoenix Night Market, which will open at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 9, in the Campus Center Event Room. Their traditional Tibetan dance performance will begin at 7:30 p.m.
On Thursday, April 10, at the Campus Center Theatre, students will have the opportunity to learn about a traditional tea offering ritual and sample Tibetan tea at 8:30 a.m. On the same day at 5 p.m., students who have RSVPed through OspreyHub will be able to join a Tibetan cooking class in the Townsend Residential Life Center (TRLC).
The week will conclude on Friday, April 11, with a closing ceremony in the Campus Center starting at 2:30 p.m.
Work on the mandala will continue throughout the day, April 7-11, in the Campus Center Grand Hall.
