'Byzantine Reflections: Ancient and Modern in Church Architecture and Iconography'

Galloway, N.J. – The Stockton University Art Gallery will celebrate the architecture and iconography of ancient Byzantine churches in a brand-new exhibit displayed on the lower floor of their gallery until March 23.

“Byzantine Reflections: Ancient and Modern in Church Architecture and Iconography” features three artists inspired by Byzantine creativity and its timeless influence:

  • Ahmet Ertuğ’s photographs explore the sacred splendor of Byzantine churches, including the Hagia Sophia, the Chora Church and Cappadocia’s chapels in Turkey.
  • Christ Kamages’s architectural designs reimagine the ancient domes and arches iconic to the Byzantine Empire in a modern context. Those interested in talking with Kamages and learning more about his work will have the opportunity to speak with him during an artists’ reception event at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28 in the Stockton Art Gallery.
  • George Kordis utilizes traditional techniques and digital iconography panels to create monumental wall paintings. His techniques will be on display during an Artist Talk & Demonstration on Thursday, Feb. 27, in the Stockton Art Gallery. (Time will be announced closer to the event.) Kordis is also scheduled to join the Feb. 28 Artists’ Reception event.

In addition to the above events, the Stockton Art Gallery will host Iphigenia Kanara, the Consul General of Greece in New York, at 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 12.

Prior to the closing of the exhibit, the Dean C. & Zoë S. Pappas Interdisciplinary Center for Hellenic Studies at Stockton will host their annual Rev. Dr. Demetrios J. Constantelos Memorial Lecture on Thursday, March 20. The reception will begin at 5:30 p.m., with the lecture at 6:30 p.m.
