Discussion on Expanding Access to Oral History Interviews
Galloway, N.J. – Rebecca Oviedo, an archivist for Villanova University’s distinctive collections, is scheduled to present and discuss a project that worked to digitize a collection of oral history interviews for public access through Zoom starting at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 10.
The project resulted from a partnership between Villanova and the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History. The interviews – conducted in 1978 for an exhibition called “Living on the Land” – were held by the Museum before being made available for the public through Villanova’s Digital Library. Through them, one gains insight into the history and culture of the Jewish farming communities of southern New Jersey through the perspectives of those who lived there.
This project furthers a continuing legacy to honor and preserve the voices, memories and stories of earlier generations of pioneers and descendants of the Jewish farming communities of Alliance, Norma, Brotmanville, Carmel, Rosenhayn, Woodbine and Vineland, N.J.
In addition to holding an M.A. in Public History from La Salle University, Oviedo is a descendant of the first settlers of the Alliance Colony through the Coltun and Levin families.
This event is free and open to the public. Those interested in joining the discussion are encouraged to register on Zoom.
