'Call Me Dancer' film screening
Galloway, N.J. — An award-winning documentary about a young Indian dancer that takes you on a journey from the streets of Mumbai to the stages of New York will be screened at Stockton University on Sept. 17.
“Call Me Dancer” stars Manish Chauhan, an athletic street dancer born and raised in Mumbai whose working-class parents depend on their only son's support. When he accidentally walks into an inner-city dance school and encounters a curmudgeonly 70-year-old Israeli-American ballet master, a hunger develops within him. Ambitious and passionate, Manish is determined to make it as a professional dancer, but the odds are stacked against him.
The documentary has won several awards, including the Audience Award at the 2024 Sonoma International Film Festival and the Next Wave Jury Prize at the 2024 Miami Jewish Film Festival. Chauhan also played the leading role in the Netflix film “Yeh Ballet,” which is a fictionalized version of his life. He is currently with the Peridance Contemporary Dance Company in New York City.
“Call Me Dancer” will make you want to jump up from your seat and, yes, dance!
Chauhan will be at the screening at 4:30 p.m. in the Campus Center Theatre and a talk back will follow immediately after the screening. Earlier in the day he will present a master class to Stockton Dance students. The free screening is open to the public and presented by Stockton’s School of Arts and Humanities.
