An afternoon with Amnesty International USA's Executive Director
Galloway, N.J. — The executive director of Amnesty International USA will speak to Stockton University students and the general public during a visit to campus on Thursday, Oct. 6.
Paul O’Brien will speak in Stockton’s Campus Center Meeting Room 5 at 4:30 p.m. He is expected to talk about the human rights priorities of Amnesty International and discuss potential career and internship opportunities in human rights, law, lobbying and political organizing. There will be a particular emphasis on how students can get involved in supporting human rights campaigns around the world.
“I’m really excited that Stockton University students will get a chance to talk to Paul and find out more about what Amnesty International is all about,” said Lauren Marie Balasco, an assistant professor of Political Science at Stockton. “His visit is a wonderful example when academic programs, student organizations and community partners come together to make something happen.”
O’Brien has led Amnesty International USA since April 2021. Previously, he was at Oxfam America where during the pandemic he co-led the group’s efforts to change government policies, corporate practice and public opinion. He also has been an advisor to the President of Afghanistan, the Africa Policy Advisor for CARE and an organizer in informal urban settlements in Nairobi, Kenya. He co-founded a community-organizing institution in Kenya and a human rights research consortium in Afghanistan.
