Nuestro Pueblo Awards 2019
Galloway, N.J. – Two Stockton University students and a professor are among 11 people who will be honored at the first Nuestro Pueblo Awards from 7-11 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27 at the Stockton Atlantic City Academic Center, 3711 Atlantic Ave.
The Havana Nights Celebration is sponsored by the Stockton Unidos organization and the Hispanic Association of Atlantic County (HAAC). It will also include music, food and dancing.
The honorees are:
Future Leader Award: Christian Cabrera, a freshman biochemistry/molecular biology major who recently
became the new youth representative on the Citizen Advisory Board of Atlantic City
Community Service Award: Stockton senior Edbelinda “Mimi” Nambo, for her work with Catholic Charities as well as other youth and outreach programs
Lifetime Achievement in Education Award: Stockton Associate Professor of Spanish Arnaldo Cordero-Roman for his dedication
to Stockton, where he has taught since 1999
Arts & Entertainment: Local DJ Mauricio “DJ Sammy” Baquero
Education: Jonathan Rivera, an Atlantic City High School guidance counselor
Entrepreneurship: Evan Sanchez from Authentic City Partners
Healthcare: Ivette Guillermo-McGahee from Allies in Caring
Nuestro Amigo/a: Jay Sodha from the Atlantic City Multicultural Community Center
Organizational Amigo/a: AtlantiCare Mission Health Care (FQHC)
Public Service: Rosa Farias from the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs
STEM: Robert Ortiz from AtlantiCare
Jessica Grullon, Nuestro Pueblo Awards planning committee chair, said the event is
designed to “promote community involvement and advancement of our Hispanic cultural
heritage by recognizing individuals and/or organizations that are making a difference
in ‘nuestro pueblo’ – our community.”
The Cuban-themed event will include professional dancers to keep the dance floor bustling. There will also be a cash bar. Net proceeds will benefit Unidos and HAAC scholarship funds.
