Byzantine Reflections: Ancient and Modern in Church Architecture and Iconography

January 21 - March 23, 2025
Lower Art Gallery

Byzantine Reflections: Ancient and Modern in Church Architecture and Iconography features Ahmet Ertuğ’s evocative photographs, capturing the sacred splendor of Byzantine churches, including Hagia Sophia, the Chora Church, and Cappadocia’s rock-hewn chapels. These images mirror the past, reflecting spiritual ideals and artistic ingenuity. Contemporary interpretations include Christ Kamages’s architectural designs, reimagining ancient domes and arches for modern sacred spaces. George Kordis bridges eras with monumental wall paintings using traditional techniques, alongside groundbreaking digital iconography panels.

By weaving historic and modern works together, the exhibition celebrates Byzantine creativity’s timeless influence. Visit January–March for a transformative exploration.

David Ahlsted: Paintings of the National Parks

January 21 - March 23, 2025
Upper Art Gallery

The exhibition includes small oil studies and large landscape paintings created between 1988 and 1995, when Professor Emeritus David Ahlsted visited national parks across the country, including many in the American West. Most of the paintings depict famous national parks like Yosemite, Yellowstone, Zion, and Grand Teton. In many cases the locations are out-of-the-way spots rather than iconic views of the parks’ most famous features.

David Ahlsted arrived at what was then Stockton State College in 1976. He helped found the Visual Arts Program and taught painting, drawing, and two-dimensional design for thirty years. Professor Ahlsted was instrumental in expanding the art program into digital fields and led the effort to establish Stockton’s first professional exhibition space.
