The Coastal Sedimentology Lab (CSL) is led by Dr. Susanne Moskalski.  Sedimentology is a field where geology and oceanography overlap, and sometimes meteorology and freshwater hydrology as well.  Typical CSL research studies involve using both the properties of sediments and characteristics of fluid flows to determine the amount, direction, and duration of sediment transport in coastal environments like salt marshes and estuaries.  Recent CSL student research includes pre-construction characterization of sediment deposition patterns in a salt marsh about to undergo reengineering; storm effects on sediment transport over a restored oyster reef; acoustic bathymetry and bottom classification in the Mullica River estuary; and a comparison of storm effects on water level and turbidity in four East Coast estuaries.
