Gender Inclusion Policies

Stockton University is committed to building a community that values and respects differences of race, religion, gender, ethnicity, national origin, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, marital status, age, ability, and disability. Fraternity & Sorority Life at Stockton supports this commitment by encouraging recruitment and membership practices that are values-based and reflective of the diverse identities within our community.

Fraternities and sororities at Stockton bring together students from many different backgrounds and lived experiences. Our community includes members of different races, religions, sexual orientations, and gender identities who come together through shared values, leadership, service, and lifelong connection.

Single-Gender Organizations

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits discrimination based on sex in educational programs and activities at institutions receiving federal funding. However, federal law provides an exemption that allows certain organizations—specifically social fraternities and sororities—to maintain single-gender membership practices.

To qualify for this exemption, organizations must meet federal criteria that define them as social fraternities or sororities. Stockton University recognizes this exemption while also maintaining its institutional commitment to equity, belonging, and respect for all members of our campus community.

As a result, many fraternities and sororities nationally and at Stockton operate as single-gender organizations while still striving to create inclusive and welcoming environments for all students.

Gender Identity and Membership

Fraternities and sororities are private membership organizations that operate under the policies of their respective national or international governing bodies. Each organization establishes its own membership policies, including those related to gender identity.

Across the fraternity and sorority community nationally, many organizations have adopted policies that allow individuals to join organizations consistent with their gender identity. Policies may vary between organizations and councils, and students are encouraged to review the membership guidelines of individual organizations for the most current information.

Stockton University supports students of all gender identities—including transgender, nonbinary, and gender non-conforming students—in exploring membership opportunities that align with their identity and values. Fraternity & Sorority Life staff are available to help students learn more about organizations, membership policies, and opportunities within the community.

Stockton University supports all students in having the opportunity to join the Fraternity & Sorority community.
