5 steps to promoting internships

  1. Write a strong position description.
A well written position description can make all the difference in the number of applicant resumes you receive. Use the format and examples provided in the guide to ensure you have sufficient information in your description.
  2. Post the Opportunity on Handshake.
Positing your opportunity on Handshake should always be one of your first steps. Every Stockton student has a Handshake account and can access information 24/7 on a desktop computer or the app. It is recommended to post the position for 6 weeks. If the opportunity is still available at that mark you can extend the deadline at that time.
  3. Reach your target audience by searching candidate resumes and reaching out to specific groups.
Log onto Handshake and search candidate profiles and resumes via the student search feature. This feature will allow you to search candidates by major, graduation year, interest and skills. Work with the Career Education & Development to connect with leaders in student organizations such as the Accounting and Finance Society, Hospitality Society, Event Planners Society, Marketing and Management Association, sororities/fraternities and athletic teams.
  4. Key in on promoting the opportunity during peak times of the academic year.
Keep in mind that students start searching and thinking about internship during specific times of the academic year. This almost always correlates when they are registering for classes for the next semester. We recommend positing position at least 3 months prior to the start of the semester.
    • Fall Term: September – December
    • Spring Term: January – May
    • Summer Term: May – August
  5. Sign up to participate in campus recruitment programs.
The Career Education & Development sponsors two career and internships fair every year. This are the largest employer/student events on campus and attract 100’s of business studies and hospitality and tourism management majors seeking internship positions. These events are hosting typically in October and February. Consider participating in other campus events such as On-Campus Recruitment, Employer-in-Residence and nformation Tabling.
