In 2024, through August, the Wildwoods reached an unprecedented milestone in tourism revenue. Several factors have contributed to this remarkable success, including targeted marketing campaigns, significant property developments, and revitalization projects that have transformed the resort into one of New Jersey's top destinations. With tourism revenue surpassing previous records, the Wildwoods' strategic initiatives and enduring charm are clearly resonating with visitors.

Record-Breaking Tourism Growth

The Greater Wildwoods Tourism Improvement and Development Authority (GWTIDA) reported tourism revenue from January to August 2024 increased by 3% compared to the same period in 2023. Notably, 2023 was already the most successful year in the destination's history recording record tourism tax revenues. Direct tourism spending rose by over $374 million year-over-year, while the 2% tourism tax revenue grew by $325,439, marking a 4% increase. Over the past five years, the Wildwoods have consistently outperformed tourism growth expectations, exceeding their projected tourism tax revenue plan by 52%.

Boardwalk and Infrastructure Revitalization

Efforts to revitalize the iconic Wildwoods Boardwalk continued in 2024, with significant upgrades and expansions. These enhancements are funded by a mix of local, state and federal contributions. The Cedar Avenue Extension project includes the Cedar Avenue Extension Boardwalk Reconstruction, featuring a boardwalk entryway with decorative archways and lighting, enhancing accessibility and beauty.

Urban Enterprise Zone and Downtown Redevelopment

The Wildwoods’ Pacific Avenue Business District is undergoing revitalization through the state’s Neighborhood Preservation Program, aimed at fostering economic growth and community vibrancy. Improvements to the downtown corridor include enhanced streetscapes, and new commercial developments. Downtown Wildwood is a vibrant, family-friendly destination located in the heart of the Wildwoods. Offering activities and entertainment for all ages, the district boasts Fitness in the Plaza classes, Saturday morning Farmers Markets, and an array of fantastic restaurants, bars and shops. Visitors can also enjoy exciting festivals, Free Movie Nights, and live Music Nights, making Downtown Wildwood a welcoming and lively hub for the entire family.

Culinary and Business Expansions

The Wildwoods’ food scene has introduced many new dining establishments (see list below). The addition of two new Starbucks and unique offerings like the retro-themed Sinclair Gas Station enhance the region’s nostalgic yet modern appeal. Additionally, an array of annual festivals reinforces the Wildwoods' cultural vibrancy.

New Dining Establishments

Starbucks: Two new locations at the corner of Rio Grande Boulevard and Park Avenue, as well as the Boardwalk at Glenwood Avenue. The Rio Grande location opened in September 2023 and offers a drive-through and window pick-up. The Boardwalk location opened August 2024 and is a full store. These locations are serving Starbucks’ famous roasted coffees, specialty drinks and food items. They have joined the other new restaurants and eateries that beckon visitors to craft a foodie adventure in the Wildwoods – with expansive choices along the Boardwalk and in the downtown, keeping the list of places to dine and nosh fresh and fun.

Free Beaches

A standout feature of the Wildwoods remains its expansive, free beaches, consistently recognized for their cleanliness and family-friendliness. These pristine beaches, voted Best Beaches in New Jersey and Top 10 Beaches in the U.S., provide ample space for visitors to relax and enjoy the scenic beauty. GWTIDA's continued investment in beach maintenance ensures visitors can enjoy these award-winning shorelines without the cost of beach tags, further enhancing the destination's value proposition.

Innovative Marketing and Campaigns

A key driver of this success is the Wildwoods' dynamic marketing and public relations strategy. Centered on the theme, "Get Lost in the Moment," the 2024 campaign emphasized emotional connections and promoted the region as the ultimate family vacation destination where you can lose yourself in the moment and rejuvenate, recharge and relax. The campaign focused on "everything you could ever want in a vacation destination all on one five-mile island." Stunning visuals showcased the pristine beaches, vibrant Boardwalk, amusement piers and diverse accommodations, while messaging highlighted the transformative experience of vacationing in the Wildwoods. This year’s campaign, developed by Suasion Communications Group and Aloysius, Butler & Clark, positioned the Wildwoods as an unmatched destination offering relaxation, adventure and lasting memories.
