Closing event for Hispanic/Latinx heritage month. Reception to Follow.
Join us to explore the unfamiliar story of how Bolivia became a haven for Jews during the Holocaust. Between 1938 and 1940, Bolivia issued visas and welcomed more th an 20,000 Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi persecution.
Holocaust survivor Mike Kleidermacher will share his life story beginning with his parents fleeing Nazi-occupied Poland to Russia. In 1947, Mike’s family requested American visas. They were denied! At the same time, Bolivia welcomed Holocaust survivors and Mike’s f amily relocated and began a new life in La Paz, Bolivia.
Moderated by Irvin Moreno-Rodriguez, Assistant Director of the Sara and Sam Schoffer Holocaust Resource Center, the presentation will include how Holocaust survivors adapted to Bolivian culture. Remarks will be made by Dr. Michael Hayse, Associate Professor of History and Holocaust and Genocide Studies, and Dr. Kameika Murphy, Coordinator of Latin American and Caribbean Studies and Associate Professor of Atlantic History.
