Holocaust and Human Behavior:

Using Facing History and Ourselves across the Curriculum for Grades 5-12

Stockton University, Facing History and Ourselves, and the Sara & Sam Schoffer Holocaust Resource Center hosted a free two-day educator seminar.
 
Dates: Tuesday, July 28th, 2015 & Wednesday, July 29th, 2015.
 
Dr. Mary Johnson and Professor Gail Rosenthal presented. The seminar focused on the Holocaust and Human Behavior with topics including:
  • Studying the past within the context of human behavior
  • Examining our universe of obligation
  • Development of ethical and moral responses for the present in the classroom
  • Integration of Holocaust survivor testimonies in the classroom
Participants earned 11 Professional Development Hours and gained experience using Facing History and Ourselves across the Curriculum for Grades 5-12.

Each of the 70 educator participants had the opportunity to meet six Holocaust survivors (Donald Berkman, Hanna Ehrlich, Elizabeth Blum Goldstein, Ruth Kessler, Rosalie Simon, and Sidney Simon) and each participant received the memoirs of the six Holocaust survivors. This project, “Adopt A Classroom” was funded by Maddie and Harvey Rovinsky.

Dr. Paul Winkler, NJ Commission on Holocaust Education, and Dr. Carol Rittner were both presenters at the teacher seminar. Dr. Rittner’s presentation was based upon her Academy Award Nominated film, THE COURAGE TO CARE.
