Stockton Peer Observation of Teaching (SPOT)

Overview

The Stockton Peer Observation of Teaching (SPOT) micro-certificate consists of three 90-minute sessions plus 90 minutes of independent preparation prior to the first session  (Total Time: 6 hours). It will be offered synchronously online and in person. You can attend all sessions in one modality or mix them.

The sessions are interactive, generative, and cumulative, with each session building upon the learning and insights from previous sessions.  Evidence-based information about effective peer observation practices embodied in SPOT and how SPOT meets the requirements of the Procedure and the Faculty and Library Faculty Evaluation Procedure MOA (2026)  are the foundation of the certificate.

The SPOT Model  focuses on building a relationship between the peer observer and the faculty member by including a pre-observation conversation  to establish trust, identify observation focus,  and review the teaching session content and plan. During the observation, evidence will only be collected for the identified university and program standards. During the post-observation conversation both parties discuss their reflections on the observed session and share resources. Following the post-observation conversation the peer observer will write the SPOT Report and share it with the faculty member.

Objectives

  • Describe evidence for each of the University Policy and Program Standards.
  • Articulate the SPOTmodel in two minutes or less.
  • Develop an action plan for implementation of SPOT.
  • Conduct a coaching conversation to provide feedback following a peer observation.
  • Author a SPOT peer observation report.
