GALLOWAY TWP., NJ The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey is offering a unique way for prospective students to try out online distance education with its new course Exploring Distance Learning: Test Driving an Online Course.

Students enrolled in the course will have the opportunity to explore a new learning environment and learn tips and tricks for successfully surfing the Internet for fun and research.

Some people may have thought about online courses but didnt know if they would enjoy it or be successful, said Cynthia B. Sosnowski, Director of Professional Development and Continuing Education for Health Sciences and Human Services. This course is a chance to find out without making a big financial or time commitment.

Exploring Distance Learning is a hybrid or blended course consisting of a two-and-one-half-hour classroom orientation, during which students will meet their instructor and classmates. They will learn the roadmap of the distance course and how to get into and navigate around the virtual classroom. This face-to-face experience will be followed by a three-week online class consisting of interesting and fun activities and exercises designed to explore the online environment and to learn the ways of being a virtual student. At the conclusion of the course students will be distance learning experts, ready to register for one of the thousands of distance courses available at the click of a mouse.

No special software or computer skill is required for the course, although a cable or DSL Internet connection is recommended. Classes are offered Thursday, Sept. 7, from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. or Friday, Sept. 8, from 2:30 to 5:00 p.m. for the classroom orientation. The cost is $39.00 which includes a certificate worth 10 percent off the first Stockton distance non-credit continuing education course.
