Stockton Celebrates Fannie Lou Hamer Legacy on Oct. 6 with 2^nd Annual Human and Civil Rights Symposium

Galloway Township, NJ The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey will honor the legacy of civil rights pioneer Fannie Lou Hamer on Thursday, Oct. 6, 2005 with its 2^nd Annual Fannie Lou Hamer Human and Civil Rights Symposium.

 

The event will take place from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center on the Galloway Twp. campus. A presentation will focus on the life and contributions of Fannie Lou Hamer who achieved national prominence by making an impassioned speech during the 1964 Democratic National Convention held in Atlantic City. There will be a brief video on Hamers life and presentations will be made by scholar, Chana Kai Lee and Mayor Unita Blackwell of Mayersville, Mississippi, Hamers home state.

 

Following the Stockton program, New Jersey Secretary of State Regena Thomas will travel to Cape May and lead a walking pilgrimage to Atlantic City, retracing the route of the Underground Railroad. The Walk will end at Stocktons Satellite Center in Atlantic City, the Carnegie Library Center, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. and Pacific Ave., at the Civil Rights Garden.
