Stockton College Spring Graduates to Receive Degrees at 33^rd Commencement Exercises, on Monday, May 9

 

Hon. Jon. S. Corzine, U.S. Senator, and Dr. Harold Shapiro, President Emeritus and Professor at Princeton University to Deliver Keynote Speeches in Separate Ceremonies

GALLOWAY Twp., NJ The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey will conduct Commencement Exercises for its 33^rd four-year class on Monday, May 9, 2005 in the Sports Center on the campus here.

 

There will be two separate ceremonies for different divisions of the College. All Masters candidates, Arts and Humanities and Professional Studies candidates will take part in a 10:30 a.m. ceremony. All General Studies, Natural Science and Mathematics, and Social and Behavioral Science candidates will participate in a ceremony at 2:00 p.m.

 

Admission is by tickets distributed to each graduate. See your graduate to obtain a ticket to the event.

 

A total of 959 spring undergraduate candidates will participate. There will also be 44 graduate degree candidates in Holocaust and Genocide Studies, Instructional Technology, Business Administration, Nursing, and Physical Therapy. The Masters candidates will also take part in a special Hooding Ceremony, 8:30 a.m. in the Performing Arts Center.

 

Faculty Grand Marshal will be R. Lance Olsen, Professor of Music.

 

Morning Valedictorian is Andrew Beutel, of Oradell, NJ, a history major. Morning Salutatorians are Anne and Carolyn Thermann, twin sisters and Business majors from Cranford, NJ.

 

Afternoon Valedictorian is Nancy Price of Sicklerville, NJ, a Biology/geology major, and afternoon Salutatorian is Adam Kaplowitz, a psychology major from Toms River, NJ.

 

About the Speakers:

 

Senator Jon S. Corzine will receive an Honorary Dr. of Laws degree. He was elected to the United States Senate in November 2000 after serving as co-chairman and co-chief executive officer of the investment company Goldman Sachs. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1969 and received his MBA in 1973 from the University of Chicago.

 

Senator Corzine is widely known as the author of legislation to establish federal security standards for chemical facilities, one of several environmental issues he has championed. He has also worked to secure more than $350 million to help New Jersey recover from the 9/11 attacks. Since then he has won additional funding for projects designed to prevent and respond to attacks and has been an outspoken advocate for shifting homeland security funding to higher risk states such as New Jersey.

 

The Senator has led efforts to protect New Jerseys seniors from changes in the prescription drug bill. Also, he has been active in the efforts to expand housing opportunities for the middle class. Senator Corzine has fought to increase federal transportation assistance to New Jersey; applied his considerable financial expertise to drafting major corporate reform law, he has worked to protect Social Security; has promoted financial literacy in school curricula; has led efforts to protect college students from cuts in financial aid; believes in affordable health care for all; is an active proponent of strengthening gun safety laws; has promoted the enforcement of civil rights laws; championed the plight of autistic children and their families; has led efforts to address the genocide now taking place in the Darfur region of the Sudan; is fighting terrorism at home and abroad; sponsoring legislation mandating tougher child passenger safety standards for automobiles and much more.

 

Dr. Harold Tafler Shapiro will receive a Dr. of Humane Letters degree. Dr. Shapiro served as Princetons 18^th President, he was elected at a special Board of Trustees meeting on April 27, 1987, was installed in January 1988, and served in that capacity until June, 2001.

 

Dr. Shapiro received his Ph.D. in economics from Princeton in 1964, and holds a faculty appointment as a professor of economics and public affairs. He came to Princeton from the University of Michigan where he served on the faculty for 24 years as professor of economics and public policy, and as president from 1980 to 1988.

 

A trustee of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, where he serves as Chair of the Board, Dr. Shapiro also serves as a director of the Dow Chemical Company, HCA, The Hastings Center, DeVry, Inc., Reading is Fundamental, Knight Foundation Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics, Merck Vaccine Advisory Board, U.S. Olympic Committee and is a member of the Board of Overseers of the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. He is also a Trustee of the American Jewish Committee and the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology. He served as chair of the National Academies of Sciences Committee on the Organizational Structure of the National Institute of Health from July 2002 to July 2003.
