Stockton Graduate Receives Commissioners Distinguished Teacher Candidate Award from the New Jersey Department of Education

GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP, NJ The New Jersey Department of Education announced the winners of the Commissioners Distinguished Teacher Candidate Awards for 2005, and Stockton graduate, Evangeline Gumbs was among the 15 honorees chosen from around the State of New Jersey.

 

Gumbs, an Iselin, New Jersey resident, received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Literature and Teacher Education in May of 2003, and minored in Writing, Womens Studies and African-American Studies. She graduated Cum Laude with close to a 3.85 GPA. She is currently substitute teaching in Monmouth County, New Jersey and says her inspiration for becoming a teacher was ignited by her own 7^th grade English Honors teacher.

 

Since 1985, the Distinguished Teacher Candidate Awards program has recognized 15 outstanding teacher ed graduates per year from around the state. New Jersey colleges and universities nominate their five most outstanding, prospective teachers. Selection is based on the academic excellence shown during the candidates undergraduate training. From there, nominees are evaluated by an impartial, eight member panel of New Jersey educators. In the past four years, six Stockton graduates have received this prestigious award.
