GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP, NJ To serve the community while learning about the hospitality industry, Michael Scales fall, 2004 Hospitality Management class at The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey established a community service project to assist area homeless shelters.

By contacting area hotels and businesses, students were able to collect donations of sheets, blankets, towels and other linens. The hotels and businesses were more than willing to help, said Scales. Among the donors were Days Inn of Egg Harbor Township, Inn of the Dove Resort, Pleasantville, Port-O-Call Hotel in Ocean City and Wildwood Linens.

Scales deemed the project a huge success. Many much-needed items have been donated, and Scales and his students hope this will be the beginning of a larger, ongoing initiative. The response was overwhelming, he said, In December 500 pounds of boxed linens were packed by the students for distribution.

Scales, who encourages non-traditional learning techniques, is an Instructor of Business Studies at Stockton. The colleges Hospitality Management track is the most recent addition to the Business Studies undergraduate program.
